Arminius

c. 18 BCE–21 CE

Arminius was a Cheruscan noble who had served in the Roman auxiliary and held Roman citizenship. In 9 CE he drew Varus’s three legions into wooded country beyond the Rhine and destroyed them. Roman writers present him as the man who stopped the province of Germany at the river.
