Robert the Bruce

1274–1329

Robert Bruce took the Scottish kingship in 1306 during the war against Edward I and spent years recovering castles. In 1314 he met Edward II’s army at Bannockburn when it came to relieve Stirling. He is the king under whom Scotland’s independence was confirmed in the field and, later, in diplomacy.
