Charles Martel
c. 688–741
Charles was mayor of the palace in Frankish Austrasia and the effective ruler of the Frankish kingdoms. In 732 he met an Umayyad raiding army between Tours and Poitiers. Later medieval and modern writers treated that meeting as a defence of Gaul; the campaign itself was one raid among several.
