Võ Nguyên Giáp

1911–2013

Giáp built the Viet Minh’s army from guerrilla columns into a force that could besiege a fortified camp. At Dien Bien Phu in 1954 he hauled artillery into the hills around a French garrison and took the valley in stages. He remained a senior commander into the later war with the United States.
