Hannibal Barca

247–183/181 BCE

Hannibal was a Carthaginian commander of the Second Punic War. He crossed the Alps into Italy and kept an army in the peninsula for more than a decade, living off the country and off allied Italian cities. Cannae is the field action most often attached to his name. He later faced Scipio in Africa at Zama.
