Leonidas I
died 480 BCE
Leonidas was one of the two kings of Sparta. In 480 BCE he took a small advance force, including three hundred Spartiates, to hold the pass at Thermopylae while the Greek cities gathered a larger fleet and army. He died in the pass. Later Greek memory treated the stand as a model of obedience to a city’s order.
