Saladin

1137–1193

Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub united Egypt and Syria and turned that combined power against the crusader states. In 1187 he caught the army of the Kingdom of Jerusalem at Hattin and then received the surrender of Jerusalem. The Third Crusade, including Richard I’s march along the coast, was the answer to those two campaigns.
