Themistocles

c. 524–459 BCE

Themistocles was an Athenian politician who argued for spending a silver strike on a fleet. In 480 BCE he is the figure ancient writers associate with the decision to fight in the straits of Salamis rather than in open water. After the Persian Wars he was ostracised and ended his life in the Persian Empire.
