George Washington

1732–1799

Washington commanded the Continental Army through the American Revolutionary War, holding it together through winters when it could not fight. In 1781 he and Rochambeau moved the army from the Hudson to the Chesapeake and enclosed Cornwallis at Yorktown. He later served as the first president of the United States.
