Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington

1769–1852

Wellesley learned his trade with the East India Company and then commanded the British army in Portugal and Spain against Napoleon’s marshals. In 1815 he held the ridge at Waterloo until the Prussian army reached the field. He later served as prime minister.
